The tool’s feed on return functionality puts the screw in line before you drive for fast, efficient placement without jams or misfeeds.

The easy to use depth of drive adjustment regulates the precise amount of countersink required for the surface material.

The tool is ergonomically designed for use with one hand, however, a cushioned second hand grip helps minimize wrist and arm fatigue by reducing the exertion needed to complete each drive.

Both kits include a detachable 21” extension pole so the user can tailor the tool to fit the job, either driving screws comfortably and efficiently from a standing position, (like when installing subflooring or decking), or without the extension pole for close-up or vertical applications.

Other features of the Senco auto-feed screw driving systems include a variable speed trigger, a 360-degree adjustable handle, a 10’ industrial strength power cord, a toe-nail nose piece that grips the work surface to prevent slipping, a no mar nose piece for finish work, a durable nylon storage bag designed to hold the fully assembled tool, and three extra drive bits: a #2 Phillips bit, a #2 square bit and a Rex drive bit.

The auto-feed attachment can be removed to drive individual loose screws if needed.

The tools are available through Senco dealers and select retailers. Brushless motors are not new to the industry but they are starting to make a splash as DEWALT makes it’s announcement and it’s likely several other manufacturers are about to this year.

Why should you care about brushless motor technology? Well the science behind these new motors will ultimately lead to cordless tools that have longer run time and superior durability. While this event only announced one new tool with brushless motors it’s very likely we’ll see many more in the coming year or so as engineers develop additional products.

The key to brushless technology is the removal of the brushes. As you can see in the image above brushes in traditional electric motors cause friction which in turn causes heat. That heat is lost energy that isn’t being delivered to the tools power. Lost energy means shorter run times and the friction can lead to reduced life span.

New Brushless Impact Driver Features

Not only does this new offering involve the new brushless motor but it comes with several key features that are new to DEWALT. The features include the following:

3 Speed Control – (0-2850 RPM; 1,500 inch/pounds Max Torque) for self-tapping screw driving in metal, (0-1,900 RPM; 900 inch/pounds Max Torque) for controlled fastening applications such as door hinge installation. Woodworkers and electricians will be able to use the first setting (0-950 RPM; 500 inch/pounds Max Torque) for finish work such as faceplate installation. The electro-mechanical speed selector is easily seen at all times and can be actuated with little effort. (Selector indicated in lower right arrow in the adjacent photo)

1/4″ Push Button Chuck – If you look closely at the impact driver you’ll notice the chuck looks significantly different than even the still new 20V MAX platform. The chuck is completely enclosed inside the “nose” There’s a small button below the nose that you push to release the chuck. I really like this new feature and it makes the driver even smaller. (Pointed out by upper arrow on photo)

20 Second LED Delay – The LED’s on the front of the driver now use a 20 second delay. This is great when extra light is needed. In fact, the driver can be used as a back-up flashlight!

The new DEWALT 20V Brushless Impact Driver is a premium product. Suggested pricing for several options include:

1.5 Ah Kit – $279

3.0 Ah Kit – $349

Bare Tool Only – $169

This is a great tool from what I could see at the show. Time will tell if this premium product will draw the premium pricing. Stay tuned as we’ll get a full review out once samples are made available. Check out this quick video for a great flyby!

Other Notable Cordless Additions

DEWALT also introduced quite a few other cordless tools at the event. Six new cordless tools were rolled out for the 20V and 12V platforms including:

20 Volt MAX* Compact Lithium Ion 3/8-inch Impact Wrench

The 20 Volt MAX* Compact Lithium Ion 3/8-inch Impact Wrench (DCF883L2), and bare model (DCF883B), features several innovative elements. (Feb. 7, 2012) – Today, DEWALT announces the launch of three new 1/4-inch Impact Drivers (DCF895C2, DCF895L2 and DCF895B) that feature the company’s first-ever Cordless Brushless (BL) Motor technology, which is engineered to achieve maximum runtime. The DEWALT-designed and built BL motor works more efficiently compared to brushed motors, and provides 57 percent longer runtime versus DEWALT brushed impact drivers, and 1.5 times more runtime versus competitors’ impact drivers in a compact, cool-running, durable cordless power tool.
A brushed motor relies on contact between stationary brushes and a rotating armature to transfer energy from the battery to the motor. These brushes are spring-loaded and apply constant pressure, which causes friction, generates heat and wastes energy. According to Aris Cleanthous, engineering manager at DEWALT, the company’s new BL motor “uses customized electronics and software designed to run the motor at its highest efficiency and performance.” As a result, DEWALT’s BL motor system consumes less energy compared to the company’s brushed motor system, which allows the tool to run longer between charges.

“I spend a great amount of my time on jobsites talking to end users about their demands in a tool, so I can attest that longer runtime is the primary concern among many professional contractors,” said Jeremy Torok, senior product manager, DEWALT.

“DEWALT power tool users will find that our new BL has an extended runtime, and therefore lasts longer between charges. This leads to greater productivity on the jobsite and less downtime.”

Beyond the improved runtime provided by the new DEWALT BL motor, the new impact drivers include a number of other innovative features designed to help increase productivity. For instance, the units include an innovative push button, 1/4-inch chuck. The chuck accepts 1-inch bit tips and allows contractors to complete one-handed accessory changes with the push of a button. Additionally, the impact drivers feature three LED lights surrounding the chuck with a 20-second delay after trigger release to provide visibility without shadows in dark work areas. Finally, a fuel gauge-equipped battery pack alerts professionals the state of charge of their battery.

In addition to longer runtime, the new units offer three speeds for enhanced application control that will benefit a variety of professionals. For example, steel stud framers will be able to rely on the third setting (0-2850 RPM; 1,500 inch/pounds Max Torque) for self-tapping screw driving in metal, while remodelers will be able to use the second setting (0-1,900 RPM; 900 inch/pounds Max Torque) for controlled fastening applications such as door hinge installation. Woodworkers and electricians will be able to use the first setting (0-950 RPM; 500 inch/pounds Max Torque) for finish work such as faceplate installation. The electro-mechanical speed selector is easily seen at all times and can be actuated with little effort.

The new impact drivers are lightweight at only 3.0 pounds (DCF895C2) and 3.6 pounds (DCF895L2). (Feb. 7, 2012) – Today, DEWALT announces the launch of its new Reciprocating Saw (DWE357), which features a unique, compact configuration that provides outstanding control and balance compared to traditional reciprocating saw designs, without sacrificing the power that professionals expect. The DWE357 is ideal for general contractors, mechanical contractors, demolition workers, electricians, HVAC professionals, framers, remodelers and other residential and commercial construction professionals who are tasked with completing cutting applications in tight spots, overhead and other challenging workspaces.

“Our new, compact reciprocating saw is designed to provide professionals with improved balance and comfort, allowing them to complete a variety of cutting applications efficiently,” said Ivonne Meza, DEWALT product manager. “The saw’s innovative configuration enables contractors to cut in tight spaces where reciprocating saws can’t typically go, providing versatility on the jobsite.”

The reciprocating saw weighs just 6.8 pounds and is 14.5 inches in length, making it 20 percent shorter than other traditional corded models currently on the market. The compact size allows users to make strong, fast cuts in small spaces such as in between rafters and studs, under sinks and in corners.

Despite its small size, the DWE357 features a 10 AMP motor that delivers the power to complete tough applications, with 2,800 strokes per minute (SPMs) and a 1 1/8-inch blade stroke length. The saw is designed to provide balance and control, ultimately helping professionals to work longer and experience less fatigue.

In addition to its compact design, the DWE357 includes several innovative features including a lever-actuated, four-position blade clamp and fixed/pivoting shoe. The four-position blade clamp is unique to DEWALT reciprocating saws and allows users to position the blade in horizontal and vertical positions. The pivoting shoe provides the leverage necessary to complete different applications, making the saw versatile particularly in flush-cutting applications. Additionally, the DWE357 includes a keyless blade change feature that allows users to replace the blade easily and efficiently.

The DWE357 also features an ergonomic handle with a soft overmold for comfort while cutting. The handle helps to minimize discomfort for contractors who use reciprocating saws throughout the workday. Also aiding in comfort, the saw features a variable speed one-finger switch.

The reciprocating saw will be available at home centers and through the independent channel in the second half of 2012. The DWE357 is expected to retail for approximately $129.00, and will come standard with a three-year limited warranty, one-year free service contract and 90-day money-back guarantee.

DEWALT® Launches New Reciprocating Saw is a post from Tool Box Buzz
