Manufacturer Competition Helps All Of Us

Competition Sparks Constant Stream of New Tool Technology

Over the past two weeks I had the pleasure of visiting the folks at DEWALT and Bosch for their annual Media Events. The thing that really resonated with me after flying home was the amazing pressure on manufacturers to push their research and development activities to keep up with their competition. Ultimately this frenzy of competition benefits each and everyone of us.

Tool Autopsy

Many of you may not realize how intense the battle is. For example on a recent trip to one of the tool manufacturers we learned that the minute another competitor’s tool hits the market they buy it and do an “autopsy” or sorts back at the lab. This constant evaluation of the competition allows manufacturers to up their game for the best performing tools. They don’t just read the labels folks, they tear the tool down and test everything from amp and voltage draw to RPM’s and torque.

Focus Groups

Another focus on research that all of the brands are relying on is end-user focus groups. Most of the major tool manufacturers have active programs to supply new tools to contractors in the field. In return for the tools they are able to get very focused input on the new designs. In addition many of the tools are fitted with micro-chips that record tool performance, cycles and valuable data. This focus on the end-user is extremely valuable and ultimately results in tools that are designed specifically for the tasks that we perform.

The Future Is Bright

There are so many exciting advancements in tool design especially in the ergonomic area which really interests me. There is a huge focus on making lighter, more compact tools that reduce user fatigue and injury. Ultimately this is great for everyone from the user to the home owner that hires a contractor. Reduced injuries will result in lower costs for everyone and that’s a good thing! I have to image that in another 5 years the tools of today will seem like a distant memory and we’ll be using some really amazing new technology to make our lives even easier.
