This tool review features the new 18V LED cordless spotlight from RIDGID. The model R8699 is a Home Depot exclusive offering that features a max output of 3,200 lumens of light. That is an incredible amount of light output in a compact package. Overall I am very impressed with the performance and utility of RIDGID’s new spotlight.

Pivoting Head Design

The head of the RIDGID R8699 pivots a total of 190° allowing users to pick a position that best suits where they are working. This feature is invaluable when working in enclosed interior spaces such as attics or utility rooms. By positioning the head straight up, the RIDGID performs a technique called umbrella lighting. The spill from the LED light beam bounces off the ceiling and illuminates the entire space. With one handheld tool, I can perform the job of a larger folding tripod light.

Beam Pattern and Runtime

The RIDGID easily lights up the entire run of a residential attic space.

The RIDGID is described as a spotlight instead of a floodlight. This means the beam pattern is tighter and more focused than a large area light. Because it is more focused, the R8699 has a higher level of candela than other lights. Candela is the measurement of a light’s intensity at a fixed spot. Combining the 3,200-lumen total output with an intense beam pattern for maximum throw gives the RIDGID the ability to light up and identify objects at great distances clearly.

The “V” shaped tree in the photo is approximately 100 yards away.

Runtime is excellent on the RIDGID 18V LED spotlight as well. I ran the light primarily with 6.0 MAX Output batteries because they balanced the tool nicely and kept it stable. In addition to stability, the 6.0 AH packs provide a full day’s worth of intermittent use.

Overall Impressions

Upon opening the box, I looked at the RIDGID and thought oh great another flashlight. However, once I inserted a battery and started using the light I was blown away by its performance. Many cordless battery-powered lights on the market provide absolutely terrible light output. The new R8699 from RIDGID defies this trend and offers exceptional performance with a well-designed head.

The RIDGID 18V LED Spotlight is currently available exclusively from Home Depot and retails for $99.00 as a bare tool. Based on my experience, this is an excellent value for anyone on the RIDGID 18V platform or anyone looking for a high-performing cordless light for their vehicle, workspace, or outdoor activities.
