Metabo HPT is back at it innovating the job-site compressor with a Pro-Grade, new lighter weight, high capacity compressor called THE TANK. The Tank also called the Metabo HPT 6 Gallon Pancake Air Compressor EC914S weighs 41lbs, is engineered with the power to run a framing, roofing, or siding crew, and is versatile enough to run five 18Ga nailers at a time.

The Metabo HPT 6 Gallon Pancake Air Compressor EC914S looks solid. A single black metal handlebar is centered across the compressor and allows for a solid balanced carry.

The rubber feet are a solid 1-inch thick and bolted securely to the frame.  Two 1/4 inch NPT quick-connect, air hose connectors come attached to the compressor.

The compressor is oil-free and has a manual on-off “lighted, “switch that is protected with a weatherproof rubber boot. The pressure regulator knob has a large red knob with positive stops.  THE TANK has a beefy 8-foot cord, and its drain valve is a ball-cock style for easy, and fast draining of tank moisture.

Using The Metabo HPT “THE TANK” Compressor

On a recent project, I set the compressor at 100PSI and was installing 16-penny framing nails easily. I experienced approximately 14 nails sunk before the compressor cycled for approximately 30 seconds.

What I like About The Metabo HPT 6 Gallon Compressor

The most impressive feature for me is the added pressure of  200 PSI, this compressor offers 25% greater PSI than a basic pancake compressor. That equates to 30% more air. The 4 CFMs at 90 PSI allows for multiple framing pneumatics.

THE TANK offers pro contractors a serious next level compressor, which can simultaneously run the following pneumatic nailer combinations:

  • (2) framing nailers
  • (2) siding nailers
  • (2) roofing nailers
  • (3) 15Ga or 16Ga finish nailers
  • (5) 18Ga brad nailers

Personally I like the size of a pancake compressor but have always cursed its capacity when performing roofing or framing applications.

The only thing I don’t like about this compressor is the noise.

Cost

Duty Cycle

All air compressors are built with a duty cycle rating. This rating is typically given as a percentage of the amount of time that an air compressor can be run in a full cycle, typically one hour, that includes the compressor’s run time and rest time. It helps the compressor avoid overheating.

Air Compressor Duty cycle refers to the amount of time a compressor can be operated in a given time period at 100 PSI, and a standard ambient temperature of 72° F.

THE TANK has an S3 50% 5-minutes on and 5-minutes off duty cycle.

If you break it down into 10-minute intervals, the compressor will run for a combined maximum of 5 minutes ON and 5 minutes OFF.

Overall Impression

THE TANK now gives me the versatility to keep a smaller, lightweight compressor in my trailer without worrying about productivity or needing two compressors. Metabo HPT did a nice job with this one.
