Porter Cable stepped up their game when they released their new line of 20v MAX Brushless tools in June 2016.  These are professional grade tools marketed for contractors.  The focus of this new system is to excel in ergonomic design while staying within a compact foot print.

They use a Lithium Ion battery platform. This improvement will give you great performance during drilling and fastening applications.  Porter Cable’s new 20v MAX line doesn’t stop at just drills and impacts.  Go to  www.portercable.com to view their new complete line of 20v MAX cordless tools.

I got the chance to use the drill driver and impact driver together because they go hand and hand.  At that time they were sold separately, but now they can be bought together in kit form that includes a carry bag.

Porter Cable Drill Driver & Impact Driver – Shop & Field Performance

After charging the batteries, I was able to tackle a punch list that I had to complete in the shop.  The grip was a dream in my hands while wrapping up this aging list. The compact sizes were perfect for hanging shelves.

I was able to use the clutch setting on the drill/driver when driving smaller screws.  When drilling ½” holes I used it in drill mode on speed 2 and also a 1/16” drill bit for some finer repairs. The projects were finished in no time with ease.  The LED lights stay on for 20 seconds after depressing the trigger which is a nice touch.

I used both the drill/driver and the impact driver during the installation of a vinyl sliding glass door.  The 3 ½” anchor screws secured the jamb of the door frame easily using the impact driver.  I was able to finely trigger in ¾” stainless steel pan head screws with both tools to secure the inactive panel.

My guys on the job site were also impressed and pleased by the compactness and the weight of the tools. They also liked that they could be used while wearing work gloves.  It was the first time that they used the cordless Porter Cable Brushless tools.

The belt clips work well and clipped easily onto my work belt or pants when tool was not needed.  Belt clips can be mounted to either side of the tool for your preference. The clip attaches with one screw on one side of the clip has a small groove on the other side to assist the clip from moving. There is also a bit clip to carry your primary or spare screw driver tip.

Porter Cable Drill Driver & Impact Driver Suggested Improvements

The positioning of the LED light on the drill driver and impact driver causes it to actually cast a shadow line.  They both have just a single LED diode at the base.  I think it would be more useful to have three or four LED lights located at the head of each tool.

Another improvement that I noticed is that the battery packs had wiggle room on the side that doesn’t clip in.  The batteries lock into the connection points securely but have some play on one side.  The batteries slide side to side while clipped into the tools.  This never interfered with the operation of either tool but I believe it is note worthy.

Lastly, I would prefer to have the battery fuel indicators located on the batteries themselves instead of on the tool.  This is always useful when you run back to the truck for a new battery and are unsure of which 20v MAX Porter Cable battery is charged.

Final Thoughts – Porter Cable Brushless Drill Driver & Impact Driver

The Porter Cable drill driver and impact driver were both compact and had a comfortable grip.  The tools performed well on all projects with plenty of power and great run time on the 20v MAX Lithium Ion batteries.  There are a few improvements that I would like to see, but overall these tools would be great addition for a home workshop, contractor, or if you’re already on the 20v MAX platform.  And whats great is that the tools come with a solid warranty to back up your future purchase.
