Dewalt DCK283D2 Cordless Compact Drill & Impact Driver Combo Kit

Being able to review this cordless kit had me thinking about the first professional cordless drill I purchased in 1992.  My first cordless drill was the Dewalt DW945K 12v in a black metal case. I used that drill for everything and until the batteries would not hold a charge.  After 9 years using the DW945K it was time to upgrade to the 4pc 18V Ni-Cad kit in the big black plastic suit case. That 4pc kit is still running today.  Now current times bring us the Dewalt DCK283D2 20V MAX brushless compact combo kit.  Let’s see how it did.

DCK283D2 Combo Kit Job Site Performance

This kit has been on multiple job sites, used by myself, other contractors and tradesmen.  The DCK283D2 never disappointed any of us.  The drill/driver being compact assisted in many applications and had plenty of power. The LED has 3 modes of brightness; the first one is the lowest setting used when you depress the trigger.  Next setting increases your LED brightness by 50%.  With the last mode, the LED will stay on for 20 minutes. This gives you a built in flashlight and most used feature on a interior cabinet install.  In the past having to keep depressing the trigger to keep the LED on is just aggravating.

Another asset with the DCD791 is its compact size and well balanced design. One project consisted of installing 2 inch soffit vents off a 10′ step ladder. Between the size and power that this drill/driver provides you, the project went smooth.  There  was no wobble, bogging down or heating up after using a 2″ hole saw in the DCD791.  Sneaking the drill in between the gutter and cable anchor point the vent holes were drilled perfectly.  Also would like to add, using the compact battery (DCB203 2.0ah) never had me reaching for the 4.0ah  that was available from another Dewalt kit on site.  The 2.0ah battery provides the power, compact size and longevity that was needed to get the project completed.

Now the DCF887 is a very comfortable compact impact driver.  The over molded grip was nice for all day use.  The cushion is textured so it is anti slip on a hot summer’s day when hands tend to be sweaty.  Both tools have theater strap anchor points on the rear of each tool.  This would assist in protecting your investment from any unwanted falls.

Using the DC887 brushless impact driver to install 5” GRK Caliburn concrete screws was a breeze.  I used the DCD791 to drill out the pressure treated lumber and a hammer drill to drill my hole in the concrete foundation.  Then using the impact driver to perfectly insert the concrete screw with enough power, no hesitation or over stripping the concrete screws.  Besides concrete screws, being able to use this impact and its multi speed settings worked very well on all task.  One project was installing new door hinges and using the screw setting was spot on.  Then whiling framing out a deck landing  with pressure treated lumber , speed 3 drove my  3 1/8” screws without any issues.

After using the impact driver for awhile, I found myself gravitate too it more and more.  The DC887 has now replaced my 1 year 18v impact driver made by another manufacturer.  The impact driver is truly comfortable and the body were the trigger is fits my hand like a glove.  The LED’s are very bright.  There are 3 of them that surround the hex chuck.  A nice design with the LED’s is that they are set back about 3/16” in the metal housing with a rubber mold covering the head / chuck area of the impact driver.

On to belt clips; for both tools they can be mounted on either side with a Philips screw.  The clips are robust and hung on my belt &  Kangaroo work vest without any problems.  One change that was made to the  belt clips , was to slightly bend  them in to fit a little snugger on my tool belt.  Tools have to have a belt clip in my book and these worked perfect after a slight modification.

Overall Impression

The Dewalt DCK283D2 Brushless Compact Drill/Driver Kit is a great combo kit with all the features to handle from rough framing to fine finish work.  The compact size, super bright LED and ergonomics are just some of the benefits you will see after using the DCK283D2 combo kit.   The size of the impact driver & drill driver are nicely designed and very comfortable.  After being on multiple job sites with the DCK283D2 compact combo kit my subcontractors,  gave me all positive feed back about the Dewalt combo kit.  Overall the Dewalt DCK283D2 Brushless Combo Kit was spot on with being well built, powerful, and comfort.
